  • 1 package marshmallows 10 oz
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
For the Decoration
  • 1/2 cup white candy melts
  • 1/4 cup blue candy melts
  • 1/4 cup red candy melts
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable shortening divided
  • 1 tablespoon star sprinkles

Equipment

  • Large saucepan
  • 9x13 inch baking pan
  • Spatula

Method

  1. Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan with butter or cooking spray. Set aside.
  2. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir until completely melted and smooth.
  3. Remove the saucepan from heat. Add the Rice Krispies cereal and stir until well coated.
  4. Press the mixture evenly into the prepared baking pan using a buttered spatula or wax paper.
  5. In separate microwave-safe bowls, melt the white, blue, and red candy melts with 1/2 teaspoon of vegetable shortening each. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth.
  6. Drizzle the melted candy colors over the Rice Krispie treats in a random pattern to resemble fireworks.
  7. Immediately sprinkle with star sprinkles before the candy sets.
  8. Let the treats cool completely until the candy coating is firm. Cut into squares.

Notes

For best results, use fresh marshmallows. You can also add a drop of red and blue food coloring to the white candy melts for more vibrant colors.
